Now the world is taken over by the fourth-generation network. From the 20th century, the 4G network catches the speed of the mobile network and grew day by day. As the 4G network delivers 10times faster than 3g, it enhanced the experience of using mobile phones, especially for video calling and faster browsing on mobile. But as the ‘G’ stands for Generation is not getting stopped with 4G technology. The new 5G (fifth generation) network is coming soon as there is a growing demand for improved data rate, decreased latency, and better quality of service. There will be a big difference between 4G and 5G in terms of internet surfing speed and download things.
Key differences between 4G and 5G
How much faster is 5G than 4G?
The 5G network speed test has already begun and it is operating at minimal 5-6 Gbps speed whereas 4G LTE provides up to 1Gbps speed. With 5G NR (new radio) and mmWave (millimetre wave), 5G will give 10Gbps – 40Gbps speed. 5G’s new enhanced mobile broadband technology is focused on developing today’s VR experiences, video gaming, 360-degree video streaming etc. You can watch 4k movies smoothly on TV or mobile phones without having any buffering. Downloads will be 1000 times faster than now.
Lower latency is the key to the 5G network
The key difference between 4G and 5G is the lower latency. Network Latency is an expression to indicate the time that a data packet takes to travel between two designed points. For faster reliable wireless communication latency reducing is the main concern for next-generation networks. The new advanced 5G technology has been reduced the latency of less than 1 millisecond (4G network has a latency of 10ms). With this advanced 5G network remote operations will make a big difference and cloud computing. Online games will be playable without experiencing any lag.
The technical difference between 4G and 5G technology
With the increased demand for internet, it is expected that 50 billion people will be connected by 2020 via cloud platforms and all will be in need of sharing data anytime, anywhere. Having in mind that rapid expansion of the connected device, the next-generation network will have to increase capacity with improved energy efficiency, cost and other architectural factors. Here comes the frequency difference between 4G and 5G.
The new 5G architecture will be using a much higher frequency band with the new radio spectrum technology. The 4G network operates between the frequency of 2 to 8 GHz and it is expected that 5G technology will allow its frequency to operate between 3 to 300 GHz.
As said by IEEE Xplore “ The new mmWave wireless communications are based on
4G and 5G bandwidth difference
With the new millimeter wave frequency technology, larger bandwidth will be achievable along with higher transfer rate. The 4G service providers are already working on the 20 GHz channel to expand bandwidths. As the world currently connected to 3g and 4G networks, it will take some time to implement the infrastructure as the 5G network carries a whole new level of technology. The 5G network’s bandwidth will able to connect a lot of devices together including home products and cars with mobile phones. 5G network will be able to distinguish the devices, which allow delivering the most reliable channel depending on the device. Users will get a much more customizable connection as that never been possible on the 4G network.
A noticeable difference between 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G
Here is a quick overview of the basic network differences between 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G. We took the last version of every generation (i.e. 2.75G, 3.75G) to make this info table.
|Data capacity||473 Kbps||30 Mbps||1 Gbps||10 Gbps|
OFDM modulation used in 5G
|Standard||GSM, CDMA||1XEVDO|| OFDMA (AI access)|
|CDMA and BDMA|
|Frequency||850MHz to 1900MHz||1.6 to 2.5 GHz||2 to 8 GHz||3 to 300 GHz|
|Latency||—||—||10 ms (radio)||<1 ms (radio)|
|Bandwidth||—||—||2Mbps to 1Gbps||1Gbps+|
When will 5G launch?
There is no official confirmed news about the launch of 5G. It is expected that the official 5G network will launch globally in 2020. The biggest tech countries like China, United States and South Korea might be the first to have full 5G network installation. Many mobile and tech companies are already working to have their devices to be ‘5G ready’ by 2020.
